About Me (The Long Bio):

My introduction

My experience of the holistic approach to health began in my early teens when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). My mother had success with complementary therapy after a car accident, so rather than accept the generally dismal prognosis for RA at that time, I tried acupuncture. The acupuncturist recommended yoga and journalling as additional healing tools, and within a few years, my joint pain disappeared. Today, over three decades later, I remain symptom-free. In addition, this approach to life has provided me with tools to heal my emotional body and rise above limiting lifestyle behaviours.

Studies

Motherhood at 21 inspired me to get even more serious about the holistic approach—not only as a healing tool, but as a way of life, and little by little I dove in. The yoga atmosphere was different at that time and certification programs were not readily available. In 1995 I was initiated in Transcendental Meditation; in 1997, when I was 26, I completed a traditional Hatha Yoga teachers program and I was certified in Kundalini Yoga in 1999. I qualified as a Reiki Master in 1998 and became a Holistic Nutritionist in 1997. I have been registered with Yoga Alliance as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (ERYT 500) since 2003. In the early 2000s I started studying Ayurveda and in 2015, I completed a certification as an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant and another certification in Ayurvedic Astrology, which is a sister practice to both yoga and Ayurveda. In 2017 my work was reviewed by the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and I certified as a Yoga Therapist.

Among the additional studies I have done, I am most grateful for:

  • The guidance I received from the late Georg Feuerstein, PhD. Dr. Feuerstein was the author of over 50 books on the history, literature, and philosophy of yoga.

  • The opportunity to retreat with David Frawley, a leading master in Yoga, Ayurveda, and Astrology.

  • My initiations in Kriya Yoga(traditional hatha yoga) under the guidance of Marshall Govindam.

  • Teachings from various yoga masters including Yogi Bhajan and Gurucharn Singh Khalsa.

  • The many hours of private studies I’ve had with senior teacher Marcia Solomon to deepen my practice of yoga postures as well as breathing and cleansing techniques and with Lynne Cardinal for yoga philosophy and meditation (1997 - 2003).

Teaching Journey

I have been teaching/consulting full time for 20+ years; Offering private consultations, including yoga sessions, reiki treatments, nutritional guidance, and Ayurveda and astrology consultations as well as public classes, workshops, retreats, lectures, and presentations and I have been leading yoga teacher training programs since 2007.

Inspired Living Comes to Life

My first yoga studio was called Core-Elation Yoga and Massage. Condominium development forced a move, so I joined Donna Davis of Movement to Health, not far up the road. Shortly after, we united and became Elation Centre. In 2011, when I was 39, Brian (my partner) and I decided to spend our winters in sunny Sarasota, so with a heavy heart, I sold my share of Elation Centre. That same year I was accepted in a writing mentoring program under the tutelage of Georg Feuerstein (I had completed his 800-hour distant course on the history and philosophy of yoga over three years, completing in 2007), and I dedicated my first winter in Sarasota to further studies under his guidance. This period of reflection guided me to gather my essays into my first book, titled, Inspired Living: A Guided Yoga Journal, which
Georg endorsed. I decided to keep the theme Inspired Living and Inspired Living with Sylvie was born.

Inspired Living

The word “inspire” derives from the Latin “inspirare,” which means “to breathe into.”Inspired Living is about focusing on, and breathing life into our aspirations, so that rather than look for purpose, we live with purpose. Click here to read my 8 Pillars for Inspired Living.

Mission Statement

In a world of high demands, where many suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, burnout, and lack of direction, my mission is to offer holistic practices to enhance clarity and bring harmony and inspiration to peoples’ lives.

Additional Tidbits

  • Since 2011, Brian and I have spent most of our winters in Sarasota, where we deepen our practice and soak in the sun and ocean air.

  • I love all my bikes equally.

  • My corporate, adult daughter has had a vegetarian diet since birth and, I have had a plant based diet for almost 30 years.

  • My traditional studies include Recreation and Leadership (Algonquin college) and Women’s Studies (Ottawa U).

  • When I started yoga, I had no interest in the yoga postures; I was only interested in meditation.

  • I am creating a work/life approach that does not include retirement as I aspire to continue teaching and consulting t’ill the end.
